Publishing Scotland is a membership organisation. There are two categories of membership of Publishing Scotland: publisher and network.
Publisher Membership
Publisher membership is open to all book and print-based publishers or online and electronic publishers (including digital publishers). Companies must be based in Scotland or publish predominantly Scottish material. Membership is also open to content providers, packagers and organisations or institutions who produce or trade in books or intellectual property.
We have more than 60 member publishers (see publisher members listing for details) made up of:
- independent companies, from one person ventures to companies with 25 staff
- companies which are parts of large corporations or subsidiaries of international companies
- publishing arms of national institutions, academic departments or funded bodies
- libraries with a publishing interest.
Publisher members publish in almost every field: reference; travel; sport; education; photography; outdoors; art; history; architecture; banking and finance; academic; health; humour; food and drink; children's; plays; religion; biography; Gaelic; Scots; transport; mind, body, spirit; poetry and, of course, fiction.
The many and varied services which we provide are supported by publishers to differing degrees, depending upon individual company's needs. They range from co-operative attendance at book fairs (home and abroad) to training, information resources and business advice. Lobbying, advocacy and linkages with other organisations and institutions for the benefit of the Scottish publishing industry are major priorities for us.
Network Membership
Network membership is open to those individuals, organisations and companies who work with or within the publishing industry but who are not actually publishers themselves. It is also open to non-publishing libraries. Current network members (see network members listing for details) include illustrators, designers, literary agents, editors, translators, print and digitisation companies, authors (through the Society of Authors in Scotland membership) and universities. Network members must be based in Scotland; supply goods and/or services to publishers; have training and expertise; and work professionally within the publishing sector.
As well as access to information, advice and resources, all members may attend the regular network events led by subject experts and covering a wide range of topics. Social highlights of the publishing calendar include the annual Edinburgh International Book Festival and Christmas events.
