Publishing Training

New presentation skills course, copy-editing and writing for the web course dates added

Investing in training

In these challenging financial times, it is more important than ever to improve your skills or working practices to  help your organisation prosper AND develop your own learning.

We are committed to providing the best training we can and with the members' fee at £150 (£250 for non-members but book 6 weeks before the course date and pay the 2009 price!), our training represents exceptional value. Check out our DISCOUNTS and SPECIAL OFFERS.

Some of our courses fill quickly so please book as soon as possible. If a course is FULLY BOOKED and you'd like to attend, do still get in touch as we can add your name to the waiting list in case a place becomes available.

Funding for companies may be available through the Flexible 5000 scheme.

InDesign

InDesign is fast becoming the industry standard application for book publishing. In 2010 we introduced new InDesign courses for book designers: InDesign for Beginners (13 May and 14 October) and Managing the Digital Workflow (27 May). We've also got Creating ePubs with InDesign CS4 on 29 September.

Communication

Anyone who edits, writes or checks materials will benefit from our courses that focus on writing and presentation of writing. We've also added a course for  another invaluable communication skill - public speaking.

Last year Writing for the Web proved extremely popular with around 100 people being trained in our public and in-house courses. We've run several sessions already in 2010 and as the next one on 16 September is already fully booked we've added an additional session on 17 November.

We've run three proofreading courses already this year and the next is on 11 November. We've also rescheduled Copy-editing from earlier in the year to 10 November.

Our new course on presentation skills - Stand and Deliver - will teach you techniques to overcome nerves and speak confidently in public. It's on 3 November at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh (in a rehearsal room - not on stage!).

Management

Our regular Editorial Project Management course covers what needs to be known to ensure a publishing project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required standard. The next one is on 12 November.

Digital

Due to popular demand, we got social media expert Jon Reed to run his a workshop on Creating Social Media Campaigns (15 June). Digital publishing consultant Katy Loffman led an information-packed course on Developing an Ebook Strategy (21 June).

Our annual Conference on 24 February featured sessions on Successful Strategies for Digital Publishing, Using Social Media to Promote your Business and the Google Book Settlement. We'll provide another digital update towards the end of 2010.

In-house Courses

We can run any of our courses as in-house courses: Proofreading and Writing for the Web are our most popular. Or if you don't see what you need, we can tailor make one for you - in 2009 we arranged Online Proofreading and Going Freelance courses as well as tailoring public courses.

For details and to book any of our 2010 courses, see the Training Courses pages.

We are still adding to our training programme for 2010 so if you have any requests or suggestions, or want to sign up for our training newsletter, please contact the Training and Information Manager.
